Laurence Kirwan Named Top Surgeon For Tummy Tucks
Tatler magazine has named Dr. Laurence Kirwan as the Best for Breasts and Tummies for the second year in a row in its Beauty & Cosmetic Surgery Guide 2012.
“It’s an honour to be recognized for doing what you love and I am extremely pleased to get this recognition two years in a row. It tells me that my patients like my work and that it’s making them happy and my patients’ happiness is my top priority,” Laurence Kirwan said of the honour.
Tatler’s Beauty and Cosmetic Surgery Guide 2012, which surveys the most sought after plastic surgeons in the UK, is due to hit newsstands in May and the honour will surely drive more people Kirwan’s way.
Dr Laurence Kirwan, who has practices in the UK, as well as in New York and Connecticut, is especially well-known for his ability to help women regain their pre-natal form with his breast reshaping, breast augmentation using his SAMBA method and for repairing damage done to tummies during pregnancy.
But it’s not just mummies who seek out Kirwan’s expertise and skilled hands. Any woman who is unhappy with the state of her breasts or tummy will soon be smiling once she has seen the results of what Laurence Kirwan can do for her. “Each woman is obviously different so they have to be approached with their specific needs in mind. When helping people to re-sculpt their bodies, I never let myself get into the mindset of ‘this is just another boob job or tummy tuck’ because for them it’s a life-changing experience,” Prof. Kirwan says.
“And I’m happy to be a part of it. For me the real payoff is the smiles after it’s all done.” Dr Laurence Kirwan says it’s his approach to his profession that has likely earned him the honour of best doctor for breasts and tummies two years in a row. When you put your patients first, he notes, they are bound to notice and to appreciate it.
Born in Liverpool, Dr.Kirwan is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is also a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and an active member of the prestigious American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Laurence Kirwan regularly gives presentations to his medical peers about his specialized SAMBA breast augmentation and reshaping procedure that is specially designed for post-natal women.
Kirwan has been featured in Tatler’s Beauty and Cosmetic Surgery Guide in 2004 and every year from 2007 until the present, among numerous other honours.
An Interview with Dr. Laurence Kirwan on Tummy Tuck.
Dr. Laurence Kirwan is a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Here the Doctor has answered some of the common questions bizymoms visitors have about Tummy Tuck.
Q. What is a Tummy Tuck?
A. A tummy tuck is usually a removal of excess skin and fat below the belly-button and a tightening of the abdominal muscles (rectus muscles) in the top and bottom half of the tummy. It is often combined with a breast lift / enlargement. Sometimes known as a ‘mummy make-over’
Another additional procedure is liposuction of the hips and thighs also performed at the same time.
Q. What are the benefits of a tummy tuck?
A. Better core strength and posture, loss of wrinkles and extra fat, ability to wear a two-piece bathing suit, flat stomach.
Q. Who is an ideal candidate for a tummy tuck?
A. Anyone with extra wrinkles (stretch marks) and fat and / or weakened abdominal muscles as a result of childbirth or weight loss after significant weight gain. Ages varies from a year after childbirth to seventh decade as long as medical health is good.
Q. How long does tummy tuck surgery take?
A. 3 hours
Q. Are there risks and complications to tummy tuck?
A. Bleeding, infection, fluid collection (seroma) under the skin, poor scar, dog-ears or extra skin at the sides at the end of the scar. These are the most common possible complications. Seroma is the most common occurring in 5-10% of patients and is treated with removal of fluid with a needle and syringe after surgery, which then helps it to resolve faster. Drains are left in after surgery to help prevent fluid collections.
Q. Will there be a scar after the tummy tuck?
A. Yes, one around the belly-button and one inside the top of the panties from side to side.
Q. How much does a tummy tuck cost?
A. The surgeon’s fee varies from $ 8000 to $12000. The hospital fee and anesthesia fee is about an additional $3-4000. All fees are estimates and the final fee is determined at the time of the consultation with me.
Q. How long do the results of a tummy tuck last?
A. For a lifetime.
Dr LAURENCE KIRWAN GIVES SOME MORE ANSWERS ABOUT ABDOMINOASTY – TUMMY TUCK AND MINI-ABDOMINOPLASTY:
ABDOMINOASTY – TUMMY TUCK
Definition: Tummy-tuck. The abdominal muscles are stretched and the skin is loose. The only cure is to tighten the muscles and remove the extra skin.
The benefits also extend to the upper thighs and the pubic area, which are lifted and tightened. Other benefits are a better back support and posture. You can wear a bikini again.
Age: Ages 20 and beyond, for women who have had children and for men and women with redundant skin after significant weight loss.
Surgical technique: The extra skin is removed and a new navel is fashioned from the old one; the muscles are repaired.
Philosophy: An incision that is hidden in a high cut bikini bottom. A sexy looking belly button and tummy.
Surgical time and recovery: Surgery takes 3 hours and requires an overnight stay. Drains to remove fluid are removed at 3 and 7 days.
Stitches are absorbable. The wounds are all healed at 2 weeks but strenuous sports are limited for 6 months until the muscles repair is strong. Back to work in 10 days.
Related procedures: Three Dimensional Superficial Liposculpture of the hips and thighs; also the inner thighs and knees and anywhere else to match the new tummy.
MINI ABDOMINOPLASTY:
Definition: Mini Abdominoplasty differs from a full abdominoplasty in at least one respect. Only the skin below the belly-button is elevated and “redraped”. The umbilicus is left alone and the skin may be temporarily cut around it to allow access to the upper abdomen and tightening of the muscle. This surgery is for women with a limited amount of extra skin usually confined to the lower abdomen and a limited or minimal stretching of the abdominal muscles. It is also an alternative for women who do not want the more extensive full abdominoplasty and the longer recovery. It is particularly good for older women with a fatty “pannus” or fold of skin and fat that hangs down.
The abdominal muscles can be tightened, just as in a full abdominoplasty by repairing the gap between the rectus muscles form the pubic bone to uppermost part of the abdomen (Xiphoid). Once again the benefits may also extend to the pubic area which is lifted and tightened but not usually the upper thighs. Mini- abdominoplasty is usually combined with liposuction of the upper abdomen. Full abdominoplasty and liposuction are usually not recommended for men and women who are morbidly obese. Weight loss to their ideal weight is recommended prior to any surgery.
Age: 20 and beyond, for women who have had children and for men and women after significant weight loss.
Surgical technique: The excess skin below the belly button, is removed. The muscle may be tightened if it has been stretched.
Philosophy: An incision that is hidden in a high cut bikini bottom. A flat tummy. A sexy looking belly button and tummy.
Surgical time and recovery: Surgery takes three to four hours and requires an overnight stay. All skin stitches are absorbable. Drains to remove fluid from under the skin are removed at 3 and 7 days. The wounds are all healed at 2 weeks but strenuous sports are limited for 4 – 5 months until the muscles repair is strong (usually does not apply if muscles have not been repaired). Back to work in 10 to 14 days.
Related procedures: Three Dimensional Superficial Liposculpture of the upper abdomen. Also of the hips and thighs, inner thighs and knees and anywhere else to match the new tummy.
